This influence led to the creation of a new, characteristically Spanish style that prevailed in the second half of the 15<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century known as Hispano-Flemish art. The Catholic Kings played an important role within the development of this trend, reflecting their own artistic preference for the realist art of Flanders. It was completed towards the end of his life, between 1465 and 1470,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portrait_of_a_Young_Girl_(Christus)#cite_note-U30-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portrait_of_a_Young_Girl_(Christus)#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and is held in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gem%C3%A4ldegalerie,_Berlin\">Gem\u00e4ldegalerie<\/a>, Berlin. It marks a major stylistic advance in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Early_Netherlandish_painting#Portraiture\">contemporary portraiture<\/a>; the girl is set in an airy, three-dimensional, realistic setting,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portrait_of_a_Young_Girl_(Christus)#cite_note-s84-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and stares out at the viewer with a complicated expression that is reserved, yet intelligent and alert.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portrait_of_a_Young_Girl_(Christus)#cite_note-VDE69-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>It is widely regarded as one of the most exquisite portraits of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Renaissance\">Northern Renaissance<\/a>. Art historian Joel Upton described the sitter as resembling &#8220;a polished pearl, almost opalescent, lying on a cushion of black velvet.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portrait_of_a_Young_Girl_(Christus)#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The panel builds on the work of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jan_van_Eyck\">Jan van Eyck<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rogier_van_der_Weyden\">Rogier van der Weyden<\/a>, and was highly influential in the decades after its completion.
