Inside the boat were several large yellowfin tuna. He complimented the fisherman on the quality of fish and asked how long it took to catch them. \u201cOnly a little while,\u201d the fisherman replied.<\/p>\n<p>The businessman then asked why didn\u2019t he stay out longer and catch more fish. The fisherman said he had enough to support his family\u2019s needs. The businessman asked, \u201cWhat do you do with the rest of your time?\u201d The fisherman said, \u201cI sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, and then teach children how to fish before I stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my friends. I have a full and busy life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The businessman laughed at him. \u201cI am an MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor. Eventually you could open your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution.\u201d \u201cAnd then what would I do?\u201d the fisherman wondered.\u201cYou would then, of course, need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then probably Los Angeles, and eventually locate in New York City, where you would run your expanding enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fisherman asked, \u201cHow long will this all take?\u201d \u201cTen to fifteen years,\u201d the MBA replied. \u201cBut what then, se\u00f1or?\u201d The MBA laughed, saying that\u2019s the best part: \u201cWhen the time is right, you would announce an IPO [initial public offering] and sell your company stock to the public. You would become very rich, making millions of dollars.\u201d \u201cMillions? Then what?\u201d The MBA businessman concluded, \u201cThen you would retire.
